Project Quilting Time: 15:1 Bird house

Image
Because I did a lot from my stash last year, and patterns, and even my scrap pile I decided to do the same again this year. I made a plan to finish UFO's and sew what I could from what I had. Most were given to charities and other outreach organizations in need. It made me feel that my skills in quilting were not wasted.  So here we go again............ P.Q. 15.1   hosted by Kim over at Persimon Dreams and prompt creator Trish we are ready to set sail into the new year. First up: Bird House This one is called "Birds on the Berm" 40" x 49" stash scrappy fabrics, straight line quilting domestic  Pattern "Birdsong" by SKW using mini curve ruler adapted size for crib A couple of years ago we put in a berm and some birdhouses in our backyard. This has been endless source of amusement to us. Especially the birds swooping down into the plants and bathing with the moisture on the sedum.  The bird patterns are a bit tricky but they magically come together to ma

P.Q 14.3 block 54-40 or Fight

Image
This week is another  Project Quilting season 14 challenge  14.3 based off a block called 54 -40 or Fight. I see it has a few other names one including 54-40 Flight or Fight. Still that is only a part of my inspiration.  We could use the block or be inspired by something. I really like the V blocks but wanted to add a curve to them so naturally since I am a certified instructor of the QCR (quick curve ruler by Sew kind of Wonderful) I looked there and what did I find? a pattern called Gaggle Battle quilt.  Mine is a little smaller than the pattern 47" x 47"  stash fabrics 4 variegated  Organic crosshatch quilting Reached into my backing supply stash and found this fun print that matched most of the 4 colors on the front. I really like how those leftover pieces of red and peach played together. It is hard to see in this photo.  Pictures outside were almost impossible. I almost caught a huge gaggle of geese flying by but a car was coming down the road. ha Linking up with Kim  @

P. Q season 14.1

Image
Project Quilting has started the 14th season. P.Q. 14.1 theme is the 1st One. I went to my stash for this as again this year I would like to use some of the things I have. I pulled out my QCR Mini Wonderful Curves  book  and ruler.  Found a stack of FQs languishing in the back of the cupboard and started. My interpretation for The 1st One is to make One shape. This will be a half clamshell. The pattern I followed mostly is called Cider House. It was square but I managed to make an extra row so it is a bit bigger. Using the Quick Curve Ruler all I needed was to cut enough squares for the design. You can see my first cut. So simple and just what I needed to get my quilting mojo going.  The half clamshell makes a great looking pinwheel and it also makes the chain like apple core. So fun and easy. To get the extra row since I was using FQs, I had to be inventive. I was able to piece each of the scrap bits together to make the squares so I could cut the curve out. Some pieces are in the con

Hands 2 Help finished

Image
Here is my 2nd annual finish for Hands 2 Help hosted this year by Mari @  The Academic Quilter This is the Scrappy 4 squares quilt I came up with. It is one of 2 quilts I am sending to my choice of charity For more info on joining in or just to see how this works you can check out the link above to The Academic Quilter.  More about my process on making the scrappy 4 squares below.  Here is the block I played with: I showed some playing around with it in a previous post. I started with a color block in the center. In this case mine were 6". I then sewed random strips of fabric together. I tried to make sure they were wide enough to cut approximately 2 -2.5" strips out of each slab of fabric strips.  I used EQ to play a layout.  In real life this was pretty scrappy overload. I think it would have been fine but I wanted it to be a tiny bit bigger. So that is why I added the color strips in the center. I think it is okay and it made the finished quilt 42" x 42".  You ca

P.Q. 13.3 scraps from the kitchen

Image
This weeks  Project Quilting  over at Persimon dreams blog is 13.3 = Kitchen Influence 45"x 45" Quick Curve ruler pattern called Chic Picnic My challenge piece came about because I want to work through my scraps, by patterns and my rulers this year.  I didn't look far to find that I had Sew Kind of Wonderfuls Quick Curve ruler pattern called Chic Picnic and decided that was 'kitchen influenced'.  In the week between challenges I was working on cleaning up some baggies of scraps.  I have piles of bags and cases of scraps. I started on the black and white etc scraps cutting them up into usable bits before the challenge started. When the challenge came out I decided to see what partial FQ's and what not I had that could be cut up into scrappy goodness. I happened to find a shoe box in the corner that had just what I needed. I added some blenders and made it work.  All the remaining bits of those FQ's I used on the back and binding. All scrappy goodness AND I

First WIP -Lucky

Image
Posh Lucky is 28" x 42"   The week after the first Project Quilting challenge (you can read about mine HERE  )I decided I should finish something I already had started.    I had a pile of cut outs from a Sew Kind of Wonderful ruler. I tend to keep a stack for practice or from demos I have taught. Now that I am a certified instructor ( HERE ) of their products I decided to get some more of the patterns made up. I also found in my stash an unusual batt. Have you ever

Holiday Spirit

Image
Trying really hard here ..to get that holiday spirit going. I hurt my back before Thanksgiving and have been watching numerous holiday movies. Normally I don't go there but I found out they are in abundance out there. Since being lade up, it has been kind of nice watching. I know many are sorta sappy but occasionally you find the diamond in the rough.  Anyway I spent quite a bit of time not moving around much. To get me going, I decided to cut some curves and decided to do the QCR Giving Tree pattern by Sew Kind of Wonderful. Cutting is super easy and fast with the mini ruler. I was able to sew a few at a time and then put it all together.    I used a Guterman thread that is not metallic but more holographic. It was perfect. It shines green where it is green and white where it is white. And best of all no breakage like some metallics.  I had hoped to take a pic when the snow was here but I was moving too slow to get it done it time for that.  Still it is done. Well, I had an idea t

Grow'n Up

Image
Another UFO off the stack! This is "Grow'n Up" 81"x 81" approx made of a collection of green scraps and fabrics with a pop of fuchsia pink which I love, QCR pattern by SewKindofWonderful called Green Smoothie found in the One Wonderful Curve book quilted by Sonya Nelsen @ GraceElizabeth's   I searched for a corn background that I could take some photos. I found corn and non-blooming sunflowers at this location but also a early morning Utility worker doing his paperwork on the side of the road. I didn't really want to shoot with him watching so I drove around some more.  He stayed there so I decided to come back the next day and yep...there he was again. ha This time he headed off when I drove by really slow ;) My plan was to hurry and get the photos before the sun broke through. I was cutting it pretty close.  I have always loved the 'love' newspaper print and use it whenever I find it! If I remember right it is a print by Carrie Bloomstein for h
