Charade QAL finish

Image
Charade quilt by  Jitterywings quilt co This quilt was so fun to make and I made a throw size before the qal even started. I gave a talk at my lqg on the topic of improv and though this is a pattern it gives the appearance of improv. I wanted to share with the guild to show that improv is not just wonky cutting.  The week I finished my guild had a sew day at the International Quilt Museum so I took the opportunity to snap some pics.  50" x 56"  cross hatch organic quilting lines The qal doesn't start until March 25th I believe so if you want to join in there is still time.  2023 Quilt parade: QAL =  Charade qAL Scrap use =  Chain of Sunshine P.Q 14.5 =  Not Square - Hexi baby #3 UFO =  Scrap set in circles #2 UFO =  Scrap Coins Gallery show piece:  O Prairie Girl P.Q 14.4 #2 =  Novel - One room school house P.Q 14.4 #1 =  Novel -My Jane pillow #1 UFO =  Winners circle - Polka dot bikini P.Q 14.3 = 54-40 of flight QCR geese QAL  Plains and Pine QAL star P.Q 14.2 = pink  Tu

P.Q. 14.2 Pink Tint: Tumbling tower of pink!

Image
Pink Tint!   I searched my stash and what do you know? I found 22 solid pink flavors in there!!! Yes and I think there may have been more but I pulled these out and decided I wanted to use as many as possible. Yes, I hoped to use some up but alas..no! I recently unearthed a Tula Pink book and an oldie book from my mom about basic traditional quilt blocks. After last months P.Q. 14 challenge of "one" or first, I liked using a few shapes as possible so I settled on a tumbling block.  Two shapes make up this whole quilt, the diamond and the triangle. Combined they make a half hexie! Found this variegated thread in my stash too! I did not waste any time finding a backing, I walked into my stash closet where I have bigger pieces and voila, a two tone pink print was right on top.  There she is: Tumbling Tower of Pink P.Q. 14.2  40" x 49" Stash fabrics Diamond pattern quilting with variegated thread Linking up with the host of Project Quilting  Kim at Persimon dreams   and

In the bleak winter...P.Q. 13.1 All the colors

Image
Time for Project Quilting  13.1 first challenge of 2022 All the colors is the theme over at Persimon dreams website. I have been doing quite a few of these challenges since some of the first seasons. Sometimes you need a boost to get started on something.  This challenge was perfect to start because it is so cold and blah outside right now.  This quilt is 40" x 55"  fabric from stash, low volume backgrounds, solids, serpentine quilting The pattern I found in a quilt magazine I have been saving. Design is by Susan Ache and it is called "Postage Plus". I decided to start the challenge by picking a random magazine and making a random quilt that fit the challenge. I have so many books and magazines that are not getting used...as in made into quilts and I am saving them for that reason so ..why not?  I have been slow to get back to quilting so I thought to start small as in quilt size. I failed to realize that postage stamp blocks are usually tres small too.  This quilt

Baby Paw

This week was either wind and rain, or wind and cold or just wind. I have been chomping at the bit to get out and get some photos. Today it was sun and wind so I went out. I had moments when the quilt almost went into orbit but caught a few to share at least.  This is a Baby Paw. I have a great nephew that this is going to even though he just turned one already. ( I actually have his big brothers quilt even though he will turn 4) I digress.... ha I had a bunch of solid bright strips in various widths so went for it.  59" x 59" approx.  Quilted in a organic plaid fashion I had the cutest "Latifah Saafir" jump rope print that was perfect for the back of this one.  Off into the wild blue yonder...ha I hope to get this to him before he turns 5! Mountain High, Valley Low - The improv triangle QAL

Image
"Mountain High, Valley Low"  48" x 38" improv from scraps line quilting in diamond pattern The improv triangle QAL with Nicholas Ball on IG was so much fun. It was just the most glorious distraction for me. I was able to sit down and make a few blocks at a time and didn't have to worry about measurements and sizes. It was just what I needed during my waiting game with my health issues.  The back piece was something I hand dyed a while back. I think it worked pretty great for this back with a few leftover blocks. I had several versions going and of course didn't think it was going to end up so big but it was just so fun to work on.  Luckily I had just the right aurifil thread. I ended up using most of the lighter ones which were a mix of 50 and 40 weight.  It took a long time to figure out what I wanted to quilt across all those colors. I asked my husband what he saw when he looked at this piece and he said points

PQ 10.4 Shake it Off!

Image
"Shake it Off"  28.25" x 29.25" (could be where I went wrong) Five hundred, twenty five thousand, six hundred minutes of sewing....um?  just kidding!!! She is made of 7 shades of gray and 3 shades of red There are 1179 pieces cut to make 558 pieces for the 279 hst blocks and another 621 1.5" squares cut for a total of 900 1.5" blocks! Made in Ne. completed only because a blizzard rolled in yesterday when I was ready to give up.  :) One week challenge for Project Quilting hosted by Kim at  Project Quilting Season 10. 4  which Trisha (quiltchicken) came up with Pixel Play. If you know me you know I love a good pixel quilt.  I am intentionally leaving my photos small because for this pixel piece it is best to see it from as far away as possible......really even if you squint you can see how much more of a photograph this looks like. Try it!!! Thumb nail size is best.  So I said we had a blizzard yesterday remember? I knew I ne

ALYoF April goal - baby boy quilt

Image
Well it is already 7 days into the month and I think I will need an easy finish for my goal. I have most of the front together on this one and waiting for some backing to come from Massdrop. I am not sure how I am going to quilt it at all so if you have any ideas???? pass them on to me. Keep in mind straight lines are really more my thing but that is because of a few limitations (I choose to believe that anyway) at the moment. The slide on tray for my Bernina is cracked so I am waiting for a replacement table with a big flat space to do some fmqing practice on. Not sure I want to risk anything too hard on this quilt though. This is going to be for a very special little great nephew! The pattern is Kite Flight by Robert Kaufmann. Not idle... just slow

Finally getting around to posting my challenge piece. I struggled so much coming up with something I liked using these fabrics. I did get something done as you see, and I submitted it but alas it was not accepted.  I do think that I was a tiny bit disappointed but then again I have been really distracted from sewing because of a recent illness with my husband. So, I am just now pulling up my knee socks and moving forward. I call this "Spumoni Sunshine".  It is pretty small at 30" w x 28" l with spiral quilting.   I used the fat eights that were sent and a bit more of the yellow and white and then gray and black of the MM  solids.  If at first you don't succeed, try, try again...right?  So maybe next time. :) Linking up with WIP wed with Lee HERE and Let's Bee social with Lorna HERE
