P.Q. 15.5 - Wearables

Image
This week the theme was Wearables. oooooo I had plans to remake a jacket. I liked the style of an old coat and when the outside was worn out I took the quilted lining out of it ..a few months ago. Sigh since that project was already started I could not do it for this weeks theme.  Instead I remembered that I had a Noodlehead bag pattern and I NEEDED a new bag!  This pattern is the Redwood tote, crossbody bag by Noodlehead.  I had some clearance HobbyLobby fabrics that all coordinated and zippers on had so went for it.  This bag has a zip and regular pocket outside and I made 3 drop in pockets inside with a big spacious inside and it has a zip top to close all.  Also adjustable strap for crossbody. It is snowing here today so didn't get great pictures but made as bright as I could.  At the last minute.... I decided to add the handle straps that the pattern calls for. I made them but didn't think I would like them. When I realized the bag is fairly deep I figured when I use the c

P.Q. 15.4 Hourglass

Image
Project Quilting challenge this week 15.4 Hourglass I recently finished an improv quilt and really liked the feel of sewing free form so when the Hourglass theme came up I figured I could do a simple half snow ball block with improv scrap corners. They look like tiny hourglass to me! Nice and bright and this one will go to local kids comfort quilt group.  I looked in my stash to see what I had. I found a baggie with a whole bunch of leftover FQ's from a group of fabric by Amanda Jean that used to blog as Crazy mom quilts. Her fabric line was made for Connecting threads I believe. It was time to pull out those cut up FQ's and get to work.  The fabric line is called " Good Neighbors"  I found a multi print and used up as many of the fall out scraps as I could to piece into the back.  44" x 50"  ziggy zag quilting made this a quick sew Linking up with Project Quilting over at  Persimon Dreams click on over and see all the entries for this week

Another UFO- scrappy diamond

Image
Scrappy Diamond was in the works for a while.  I started cutting up squares from my bigger (and getting tired of using the same fabric) stash pieces. I had an abundance of low volume fabrics too so it was easy to plop them together and just make HSTs.  This layout is super fun to make by the way. 64 x 80" approx. I used up a bunch of the HSTs on the back and it worked great to piece the back with them! Plus I finished 13 receiving blanket/play mats from my flannel stash (still have) and dropped them off with the baby flannel blankets from previous post.  linking up with  Wendy  Peacock party Finish or not Friday with   Alycia Quilts Confessions of a Fabric  Addict 2023 Quilt parade: Midnight Mystery UFO 2016   Baubles quilt and  book review  for Kelly Young Fun Flannel  3 Flannel quilts , 2 homeless pillows and a Tilda Cow Sundown on Scraps  a scrap art quilt  and kit recycle bags/pillows Scrappy  strips throw 2 scrap bag  strip set quilts 2 More  Baby Hexi Quilts  including one g

New Book Review: Perfectly Pieced Quilt Backs by Kelly Young

Image
New Book by Kelly Young - Perfectly Pieced Quilt Backs I am so happy to read and review and use this book to work on my stash. Kelly has great tips and simple layouts to help you use your scraps up in a way to work with the front of your quilts. By using her tips you can use up leftover blocks and bits from the quilt you are making and you are not left with a huge scrap pile.  If you have been following me at all but especially this year I have made it a mission to use my stash.  Part of that mission was emptying out a couple of huge bags of scraps.  HERE  is an example of some of the scraps I used up. In Kelly's book there are 30 different quilt backs ideas. 15 using leftover scrappy bits and 15 more from yardage. Her book  features  great full quilt finishing instructions and each back has instruction for 3 sizes given.  Not only do you get all that help but she has also included 18 lap sized quilt patterns for downloading.  Wow, so much right here in one place to help you sew be

All scraps all the way

Strippy Scraps quilt. Another all scraps all the way....scrap batting, scrap binding bits and scrap bag bits. I even went to an old machine I don't use often and emptied out most of the bobbins using up thread that was not getting much love.  This quilt was so fun to make just mindlessly sewing scraps of the same size together. I usually make the stripping about 15 to 20 inches wide then trim up. I just plunk the chunks on the wall and fit them together.  So much satisfaction to use these up.  Like I said in yesterday's post about the baby scrap quilts... sometimes you just get tired of some fabrics in your stash and you just want to use them up. So I used up some on the back too! Kind of crazy looking but so is the front. Yay...using my scrap stash....and the journey keeps on going.  Stay tuned for more scrappy things. 48" x 60" 2023 Quilt parade: 2 scrap bag  strip set quilts 2 More  Baby Hexi Quilts  including one giant flower garden QAYG =  Diatom  scrap quilt 1 a

A scrappy QAYG = Diatom

Over the years I have experimented with QAYG quilts. I really love when you can make something from ALL the scraps. I used scrap fabrics, scrap batting  and use up thread colors in bobbins that I don't normally use up.  ( I actually like using up the bobbin threads from other machine too as I never have the color I need and never have empty bobbins so...?) I ..........LOVE doing this! All of it. I am so satisfied using up batting bits as my foundations. Strips, squares...they all work. This block was a happy accident. I had no idea how it was going to come together and I made more blocks than I used so ya know...another quilt probably ...hahaha Me trying to use the remote..haha If you can't laugh at yourself..right? Better..haha I had this one done the day I did the quilt parade last week.  HERE  are the ones from last week Speaking of using scraps, I asked a few guild members if they had batting strips they didn't know what to do with.  I scored a few bags of scraps and wo

Just a couple weeks ago for Project Quilting season 14 I made a "Hexi Baby" quilt for 14.5 challenge 'so not square'. The one on the far left.  It was so fun and fast that I cut up a bunch of fabric and made 3 more for........ local kids charities. Patriotic Hexi Baby Various animals Hexi Baby Construction Hexi Baby These really are fast and easy. I plan to make more but taking a break to do some other things. I would like to say a lot of fabric was used up in the making of these but alas...not really. I mean some sure but ....guess I just have way to much in my stash! I wanted to photo and post these last week but we have had rain, high winds and cold temps. I did attempt to take some pics inside but they  really are more like happy accident pics trying to use the remote camera shutter.  This is my first one made for the PQ challenge HERE . It is so cheery! Quilt parade  outside while wind is down! Free Hexi-Baby templates  with directions Please give me credit for t

P.Q. 14.6 Conquer a fear

Image
Project Quilting 14.6 Posey Patch So Project quilting this week for 14.6 was Conquer a fear. While I  don't feel this was a fear really it was a bit of a challenge. I wanted to use scraps/stash as per usual this year AND I wanted to do some applique AND I wanted to incorporate a paint chip challenge that my friend and I came up with a few weeks ago. Also my goal was to make baby size quilts for each challenge this year so my finish is 41" x 42" I was able to use the bottom 5 color chips! Woot..... I drew up a loose applique design that I felt was kind of fun.  I used a bunch of odd sized scrap cuts. Sorted them into piles of widths and then just chain pieced them together and then cut at equal lengths. Like a jelly roll race sorta. Made a great background for my applique plus I actually used some of my stash up for a change. I just started drawing on fusible web paper and cut out on various colors and voila!
