Scrap Bustin'

Image
Scrap Bustin' is one of my finishes so far this week.  50 x 60 approx. My scrap drawers are full of strings and crumbs but I also found partial Fat Quarters and thick strips in some bags laying around my sewing room. I decided to use more of the neutrals I had and cut them into 6" squares and then logged around them with random sized strips and then cut them up again and sew them back together in a cross type pattern.  More scraps and an orphan block used up on the back along with the strange purple print fabric I had in my stash.  I am so happy that I was able to bust out and use up a bunch of scraps but I will just admit that I have so so so many more scraps to use. How about you? My new Babylock Jane!!! I love this baby so far. This is an industrial machine very similar to the Juki 2010. I love the fast speed and I love love love that it sews over different thickness and doesn't break the thread!  I bought this machine from a local dealer he

Finish Friday - Vintage Star

Image
Windy day here but tried to get a few snaps of this Vintage Star quilt because it is heading to  LIncoln Quilts for KIds  tomorrow.   This is the second time I made this star. I love the giant half square triangles it takes to make this quilt. Virtually no waste except for squaring up blocks. Simple tutorial can be found by Amy Smart for  We All Sew .  My bleeding heart survived the freeze last week and is back bold and big as ever.  This is the first quilt I tried to free motion quilt on with my new Babylock Jane industrial machine. It was so much fun and I felt I had so much more control with the extra harp space I now have. I can't wait to experiment more.  Linking up with  Crazy Mom Quilts Finish Friday also linking up to  this months challenge theme is FINE. I am linking this piece because of my first time free motioning on my new Baby Lock Jane. I did a FINE job and hope to do so much better in the future.

Scrap Stash and Go

Scrappy Tula 38 x 48 approx stash fabrics Last week after finishing the My Way -Rebel  quilt using all fabrics from my stash I was so happy. I realized the potential of my stash and decided to dig in to more bags and totes and see what I had to make. This quilt was from a partial layer cake of Tula Pink fabrics. I decided to treat it as scrappy and add some Grunge.  At first I thought it was too busy but laying it out next to these beautiful red tulips, I think it looks happy! The colors are kind of crazy but I really like it and its scrappy feel.  In keeping with the stash and using what I have I found 6 FQs for the backing.  These are some Anna Maria Horner prints I have had for a while.  I think it works! What do you think?  Machine quilted with wavy stitch gives it great texture.   So happy to use up some of my stash...just wish it was more. Off to put my thinking cap on and see what is in the next bag or tote!!  Before I forget, my lqg had a sew da

Calling this one "My Way" it is the Rebel pattern from Libs Elliot I love the bright colors but played with the neutrals in this one.  approx 73 x 73 straight line quilting with walking foot Leftovers on the back  plus some extra fabric. Kind of fun.  and  New label by Northcott fabrics.  Linking up with Let's Bee Social over at  Sew Fresh Quilts and Needle and Thread Thursday @  My Quilt Infatuation   and  Finish it up Friday with  Crazy Mom Quilts

Inspired to do Modern hst sampler

Image
The Modern HST sampler by Alyce of  Blossom Heart quilts I was just at a sew in with some quilty friends and we were talking about the hand-dyes we made last year. I had not even used them yet. I decided I could try with this sampler. I had this med gray triangle fabric planned to use for the sampler but with the hand-dyes it is pretty dull. I will see how it goes and maybe try to lighten in up a bit. The blocks all came together really nicely. Love doing all the hst methods.

Friday Finish Improv "Closer to you"

Image
"Closer to you" approx 46" x 48" spiral quilting did not straighten edges, just bound as is I finished! I am super surprised at this one. I have been working on doing the Improv scores from the book The improv handbook for modern quilters by Sherri Lynn Wood.  This is my #4 score on the patchwork doodle. I started the center blocks of this quilt last year when Louisiana Bendolph taught a class about Gees Bend quilts and quilters.  A good portion of this fabric is up-cycled pieces from my moms scrap box. The coral strips are pieces from an old dress. There is even a dart or two in my quilt that I left in.  Some of the denim is from a patch bag that she also had in her stash so I am assuming they are bits from her old jeans.  I didn't have any striped scraps from my dads old Oshkosh overalls so I went to the thrift store and bought a few striped shirts.  The lighter blue fabrics are from the portrait quilt I made of my mom called  So Blue .  The sco

WIP Midnight Mystery Quilt Top Finish

Image
Finished my Midnight Mystery Quilt top last night put on by Cheryl Brickey of Meadow Mist Designs.  Today I could play around with some photos. I wish I had it quilted because I really like how this turned out.  It finished around 72" square and I think I will need some help getting that quilted...maybe.  I used story fabric in the mustard/gold and my favorite news print in  cream. This is the third quilt I made with the Kona snow that came in a kit for my "The eyes have it"  double-sided quilt. I still have about 3/4ths of a yard left.   I admit I have a few troubles with my flying geese blocks and some of the points made with the flying geese points later. I think the squares pressed a little biasy but over all I really like it.  If anyone has any hints on how to make the no waste flying geese and you never get extra fabric in the point from when the other piece is sewn on...I wish you would share. I always get a little raw edge in there as if
