Barbed wire and Beauty

Image
17" x 17.5" paint on fabric hand and machine quilted This small art piece I created in the textile artist group on fb. The idea was to try all sorts of mark making tools, cut it up and stitch it back together. Since quilting is my thing I cut apart and stitched back together with hand work and machine work.  "Barbed wire and the beauty beneath" is an ode to the pasture land my husband and I have been trying to clean up. Beneath all the grass and dead trees were huge rolls of barbed wire and fencing wire. Lots of rocks and old fence posts and numerous other things.  I randomly painted on an old sheet. Cut it up and fitted it back together where some marks overlapped.  I added bits of magenta paint and found in my paint drawer a piece of sheet that my quilt bee group and I played with shaving cream and paint. It went with my layout so I used it.  I randomly hand stitch bits and then layered my pieces on a piece of organdy. I used a black batting to keep it from lookin

" Crazy Memories" 34" x 33.5" scrap vortex slab leftovers in my scrap bin decorative machine quilted and some hand big stitch Project Quilting Challenge this week is 'You're Crazy". You can see all the entries  HERE  . So many interpretations.  I wanted to do scrap something? for my challenge since I am also doing  Sewthescrapoutofmarch  with Tea and Brie for National Quilting month (march) When I was digging in my scrap jar, drawer, bag(s), bin, shelf....um, I found a bunch of scrap vortex(vomit some call it) that is leftover from a quilt top I made last year that still isn't quilted. :) I had to slice and dice some colors and sew bits here and there to get enough to make my rainbow square in a square.  I dug out some variegated threads to top stitch around the black areas. The 40 wt ones really showed nicely. It was fun to use those again. I learned that a top stitch needle in my machine worked really well as some of those scraps are seam upon sea

"A kind of hush"  15.5" x 15.5"  Black and white mini challenge Improv pieced Sheer overlay Machine and hand quilted I wanted to participate in  Curated Quilts Mini Black and White Challenge so I started thinking of movement in air in water and in thought. I soon felt stuck and put it aside for a few days.  I was on FB and saw a photograph someone had taken of a really cool zen stack of rocks and the sun peaking through a crack between the stones. The hole was perfect and allowed rays of the sun to explode out through the hole.  I was so inspired by the beauty and calm that I walked into my sewing room last night and jumped back into my movement of air, water and thought.  Out came .... A Kind of Hush.  I played around with the improv shapes but it felt too something? I always like to try new things and thought why not try a sheer overlay to calm it down.  I have a stash of clothing fabrics and found this sheer white orga
