P.Q. 15.4 Hourglass

Image
Project Quilting challenge this week 15.4 Hourglass I recently finished an improv quilt and really liked the feel of sewing free form so when the Hourglass theme came up I figured I could do a simple half snow ball block with improv scrap corners. They look like tiny hourglass to me! Nice and bright and this one will go to local kids comfort quilt group.  I looked in my stash to see what I had. I found a baggie with a whole bunch of leftover FQ's from a group of fabric by Amanda Jean that used to blog as Crazy mom quilts. Her fabric line was made for Connecting threads I believe. It was time to pull out those cut up FQ's and get to work.  The fabric line is called " Good Neighbors"  I found a multi print and used up as many of the fall out scraps as I could to piece into the back.  44" x 50"  ziggy zag quilting made this a quick sew Linking up with Project Quilting over at  Persimon Dreams click on over and see all the entries for this week

Project Quilting Time: 15:1 Bird house

Image
Because I did a lot from my stash last year, and patterns, and even my scrap pile I decided to do the same again this year. I made a plan to finish UFO's and sew what I could from what I had. Most were given to charities and other outreach organizations in need. It made me feel that my skills in quilting were not wasted.  So here we go again............ P.Q. 15.1   hosted by Kim over at Persimon Dreams and prompt creator Trish we are ready to set sail into the new year. First up: Bird House This one is called "Birds on the Berm" 40" x 49" stash scrappy fabrics, straight line quilting domestic  Pattern "Birdsong" by SKW using mini curve ruler adapted size for crib A couple of years ago we put in a berm and some birdhouses in our backyard. This has been endless source of amusement to us. Especially the birds swooping down into the plants and bathing with the moisture on the sedum.  The bird patterns are a bit tricky but they magically come together to ma

New Book Review: Perfectly Pieced Quilt Backs by Kelly Young

New Book by Kelly Young - Perfectly Pieced Quilt Backs I am so happy to read and review and use this book to work on my stash. Kelly has great tips and simple layouts to help you use your scraps up in a way to work with the front of your quilts. By using her tips you can use up leftover blocks and bits from the quilt you are making and you are not left with a huge scrap pile.  If you have been following me at all but especially this year I have made it a mission to use my stash.  Part of that mission was emptying out a couple of huge bags of scraps.  HERE  is an example of some of the scraps I used up. In Kelly's book there are 30 different quilt backs ideas. 15 using leftover scrappy bits and 15 more from yardage. Her book  features  great full quilt finishing instructions and each back has instruction for 3 sizes given.  Not only do you get all that help but she has also included 18 lap sized quilt patterns for downloading.  Wow, so much right here in one place to help you sew be

Just a couple weeks ago for Project Quilting season 14 I made a "Hexi Baby" quilt for 14.5 challenge 'so not square'. The one on the far left.  It was so fun and fast that I cut up a bunch of fabric and made 3 more for........ local kids charities. Patriotic Hexi Baby Various animals Hexi Baby Construction Hexi Baby These really are fast and easy. I plan to make more but taking a break to do some other things. I would like to say a lot of fabric was used up in the making of these but alas...not really. I mean some sure but ....guess I just have way to much in my stash! I wanted to photo and post these last week but we have had rain, high winds and cold temps. I did attempt to take some pics inside but they  really are more like happy accident pics trying to use the remote camera shutter.  This is my first one made for the PQ challenge HERE . It is so cheery! Quilt parade  outside while wind is down! Free Hexi-Baby templates  with directions Please give me credit for t

P.Q. 14.6 Conquer a fear

Image
Project Quilting 14.6 Posey Patch So Project quilting this week for 14.6 was Conquer a fear. While I  don't feel this was a fear really it was a bit of a challenge. I wanted to use scraps/stash as per usual this year AND I wanted to do some applique AND I wanted to incorporate a paint chip challenge that my friend and I came up with a few weeks ago. Also my goal was to make baby size quilts for each challenge this year so my finish is 41" x 42" I was able to use the bottom 5 color chips! Woot..... I drew up a loose applique design that I felt was kind of fun.  I used a bunch of odd sized scrap cuts. Sorted them into piles of widths and then just chain pieced them together and then cut at equal lengths. Like a jelly roll race sorta. Made a great background for my applique plus I actually used some of my stash up for a change. I just started drawing on fusible web paper and cut out on various colors and voila! Scrap Adventure

Yesterday my friend Jen and I got together to soak up some street art. I happened to have a few quilts I needed to post about so it was perfect.  Jen found this great wall and so I made her be my quilt holder.  This one is a scrappy coin improv quilt.  42"X 49" organic wavy line quilting You would think a lot of scraps were used but...not so much.  There she is (Jen) in this cool alley she found.  Another scrappy finish. This one a UFO from a year couple years ago. 50"x 59" scrap made fabric then set in the circle (so fun) cross square straight line quilting Another cool mural wall with a giant frog.  I should name it Peek-a-boo just for Jen! Again some scraps but not a lot. One thing Jen wanted to do was an activity with paint chips. We headed out to a couple places and found some fun colors.....um, quilt colors of course.  We were to somehow make a poem though so using the names of the paint chips here goes..... "Starting today, as the sun goes down the lovel

Scrappy sewing

Image
The last 7 days I did a quick scrap friendly sew along with  Plains and Pine  #wildstarsal on instagram.  We made scrappy diamonds and then we were supposed to sew the background but I didn't have quite enough so had to improvise.  I have a ton more scraps but every little bit ...right? I have a bunch of this lovely vip calico fabric that worked great for a foundation for my scraps. It is very thin so the bulk barely is noticed when I quilted.  I hardly use decorative type stitches on my machines so thought I would try this multi-stitch zig zag.  I thought since this was called Wildstar that it should be out in the wild but it was very cold and windy today so not such a good idea.  39"x 38" after shrinkage stash scraps and grunge diamond straight line quilting Linking up  Life in Pieces Melva Loves Scraps

Hands2Help -22

Image
I am once again participating in Hands2Help comfort quilt challenge. This year Mari @  Academic Quilter  is hosting. You can find out more information by clicking on the link above.   I chose the  Little Lambs  Foundation for Kids again.  I am also working on several comfort quilts for my local  Quilts for Kids .  So far I am working on an idea for a scrappy quilt. I am using bright or solid 6.5" squares I cut out of a box of scrapped FQ's. I have just enough to make the quilt using my randomly sewn together scrap strips.  I think this is going to work and be fun!! I made a couple sample blocks and love the wonky mix mash of strips. We shall see. In other progress lately, I worked on a Kawandi quilt. This is handmade quilt starting from the outside in. I did not use batting in mine as I was not sure how it was going to work. I turned under the edges of the top most pieces and stitched it all down with big stitch.  I really liked the process but ended with a bit of extra fabric
