Double Flannel Receiving blankets with back to front binding

Double Flannel Receiving Blankets are warm and snugly. These blankets use 2 pieces of flannel. Once you cut off the selvages and straighten the other two ends that is the size of your first piece of flannel. The second piece you do the same but make it 2" in width and length smaller.
*note: it is advisable on flannel to buy extra and wash it first as flannel really shrinks and varies from piece to piece. Read through instructions before starting this project.

Now lay out the bigger piece right side down on your table or cutting mat.

Place the second flannel face up 1 inch should be showing of the bottom flannel all around.
Now you are ready to press the binding over the top flannel. I press all the way around keeping the two flannels lined up together. You may want to pin this before moving it around your ironing surface.

When it comes to the corners fold over 1" both ways to give it a crease. It will be easier when it comes to the next folding process.

Next you will take your folds and hand turn the the fabric under one more time to approximately 1/2" showing on the top. I did not take a picture before I had it all turned. You can see below what the new fold looks like and what the corner looks like.

The corners are going to be thick. I used a pin to hold the bulk for the moment. Give it a press with your iron if you don't like the pins in the way when you get to the sewing machine.

I used my walking foot because it smoothly feeds these bulking sticky fabrics. Top stitch the new fold down. When you get to the corners I found it is really best to have a stiletto or purple thang to hold the bulk so you get a nice straight stitch around the corners.
For added security you can clip a tiny angle out of the bulk you folded under but don't clip too much. I top-stitched the corner to hold down where I clipped so no shredding can happen with all the repeated washings a baby item gets.

And done!

These make nice heavy play blankets, stroller or carrier covers and warm snugly wraps. Plus when you make your own it allows for bigger sizes. These both ended up about 42" x 44" big.
Enjoy. Let me know if you have any questions or leave me a comment if you make one of these using my instructions.
