Project Quilting Time: 15:1 Bird house

Image
Because I did a lot from my stash last year, and patterns, and even my scrap pile I decided to do the same again this year. I made a plan to finish UFO's and sew what I could from what I had. Most were given to charities and other outreach organizations in need. It made me feel that my skills in quilting were not wasted.  So here we go again............ P.Q. 15.1   hosted by Kim over at Persimon Dreams and prompt creator Trish we are ready to set sail into the new year. First up: Bird House This one is called "Birds on the Berm" 40" x 49" stash scrappy fabrics, straight line quilting domestic  Pattern "Birdsong" by SKW using mini curve ruler adapted size for crib A couple of years ago we put in a berm and some birdhouses in our backyard. This has been endless source of amusement to us. Especially the birds swooping down into the plants and bathing with the moisture on the sedum.  The bird patterns are a bit tricky but they magically come together to ma

P.Q. 13.4 QAYG -mining for diamonds

Image
51 x 51 approx. This weeks challenge from  Project Quilting 13.4  is Mining for Diamonds.  You can click on link to take you to see all the interpretations. Mine came from my stash and a need to empty out some bags of chunks of fabrics I have stashed and also my sister gave me a bag of her cut offs of batting.  I have wanted to do another QAYG (quilt as you go) project. I love them. Here are a couple from my past go at them:  Under the rug and  Scrappy strings This time I decided to see if there were any other methods to use. I pulled out the fabrics I had stashed and saw that I could use the coordinates pretty easily.  With the bigger pieces I thought I could do more. I found a tutorial and free pattern with some videos  by Monica Poole . This to me looked pretty simple and accurate so I decided to give it a go.  I liked that I was able to use my big bias tape maker which was sitting in a drawer.  (one of my goals this year is to use rulers, patterns etc that I own) This pattern is no

Project Quilting Season 12.2 Kaleidoscope style

Image
38" x 48" Serpentine quilting with walking foot.  All stash fabrics (should win for use of oldest pieces of fabric...guessing over 20 years on easter eggs and backing fabric) Yep that is indeed Easter Eggs! I can not tell you how old this piece of fabric is but it has been in my stash a very long time. I remember I bought it specifically for making a kaleidoscope quilt.  When I started looking at it closer I remembered why I did not end up making it all those years ago. The problem? The print is very close. By that I mean the shapes are very similar and the colors are pretty similar and it really doesn't make for a dynamic kaleidoscope. However, it does make a very soft babyish one and so I finished this up to give to my pet project Quilts for Kids again! I played around with several solids to sort of modernize the piece but really it was never really going to go modern.  I do like the solid colors I ended up with though.  Honeydew, melon, blue and gold.  You can see some

Project Quilting 2019 Season 10.1

Image
2019 starts Season 10 of Project Quilting hosted by Kim  Persimon Dreams . The first challenge for the season was "Hope Springs Eternal".  I did not have a resolution this year but in my head I want to use a lot of what I have and dig out my patterns and books and just have fun making stuff. Well when the challenge came last Sunday I thought that the Hula Girl pattern by Sharon over @ Color girl Quilts  fit the bill. I love the linking rings in this quilt. Well, truthfully I had a bit of trouble paper piecing them to size from my printer but now I love them. haha The rings link in a way that allows everyone one to fit together, be together, side by side. Various low volume prints and solids in the back ground make the rings pop. Like the Olympic rings, I feel it represents everyone from everywhere coming together. I think that is hopeful. I loved using the low volume fabrics for the Mystery QAL by Kim and I didn't get it finished before the PQ 10.1 star

plus Six makes EIGHT

makes 8. I was able to take some time since last months sew day for Quilts for Kids and get these beauties put together and quilted.  On our sew day in June several ladies brought squares to swap with some of mine to make the 3 scrappy quilts on the left. We used  Allisons Tutorial: Easy stack cut and sew blocks  over at Cluck Cluck Sew.  These 6 plus the other two I previously made this year  HERE  and  HERE  make 8!  Happy 8th Birthday Lincoln Quilts for kids group!!! Here are some of the blocks we made during the day.  I went to visit my sister one day and she helped me prepare for the sew day. We cut enough blocks for several quilts.  You can see how fun the blocks are when they are coordinated or when they are scrappy! And they go together fast. I would recommend this as a group project.  After quilting those in 3 days I had a feeling that my sewing machine might need some love. It is currently in for service. I am using my Babylock Jane to fre

and fellow lqg member  Steph .   Turning in circles approx. 38 x 48 stash fabric  walking foot and free motion Steph taught a quick HST class.  We were to let the hst's be random.  I think it fell together nicely.  I started with a FQ pack of 5 and added a few more from my stash. The Elizabeth Hartman butterfly fabric was perfect for the backing.  There were 3 offset groups of hst's that formed an hourglass square so I chose to feature those three with circle quilting. Two were done with walking foot and then I decided to try the free motion foot and just wing it. :) Large pebbles filled in the rest.  I really like how the colors worked together and a few more pieces got relegated to the smaller scrap bin.  This will go to Quilts for Kids charity.  Lastly I forgot to share my new favorite recipe. I decided to make a carrot cake for Easter. I found a recipe that is grain free, gluton free, processed sugar free and dairy free. It

Daisy Panel for a Little Girl

Image
"Daisy" Little Girl Panel quilt approx. 38 x 45 Straight line quilted This panel was in my stash for .....years! My local chapter of Lincoln Quilts for Kids decided for a little fun challenge this month to use up a panel you had. I found this and could not even cut it up it was so cute.  Decided to just frame it out with some flower and lady bug fabric.  Stash fabric for the back too. I should go back and see just how many quilts I have made this year from my stash only!! Finish frenzy

Finally grabbed something off my UFO pile and got it done today.  Woot! This one was some miscellaneous fabric I cut out in a tumbler cut to make for a Quilts for Kids quilt. The layout of this quilt is to use a panel fabric or a big design fabric in the big open space and then add the tumblers. This is kind of crazy bright and bold but I am sure someone will love it.  I had to take the picture out of the wind so you really can't see how bright this is but trust me! Did a simple mum flower freemotionquilting on it. The bonus is I used up some of the fabric I have in my stash and that is always a good thing.  I am linking up with Amanda Jean @ Crazy Mom Quilts Day 2 of 31 days of blog writing! HERE
