P.Q. 15.2 - Sky color -All Glory

Image
This week Project Quilting theme was Sky Color. Well I immediately thought of using scraps as I have little piles of partially used FQ's and such on every available surface and in baggies in drawers. (doesn't everyone?) I am calling this one "All Glory" it measures approx. 56" x 70"ish I tried to be organized and use up whatever of the scraps I had. Bigger pieces went into 6", 5", 3.5" 2.5" and finally these rectangles. The pattern I used is a free tutorial from  Kitchen table quilting called "Valued scrap quilt" I felt this lent itself perfectly to making sky color happen!   One of my husbands snaps of pasture gave me the idea to mix a variety of scraps. After cutting a variety it was a matter of using them all up. What was once going to be a crib quilt turned into something bigger. I made the colored scraps I had cut fit.  Went to my usual spot for a quick pic. The snow was not so bad here.  I was hoping for an early morning s

Another UFO- scrappy diamond

Scrappy Diamond was in the works for a while.  I started cutting up squares from my bigger (and getting tired of using the same fabric) stash pieces. I had an abundance of low volume fabrics too so it was easy to plop them together and just make HSTs.  This layout is super fun to make by the way. 64 x 80" approx. I used up a bunch of the HSTs on the back and it worked great to piece the back with them! Plus I finished 13 receiving blanket/play mats from my flannel stash (still have) and dropped them off with the baby flannel blankets from previous post.  linking up with  Wendy  Peacock party Finish or not Friday with   Alycia Quilts Confessions of a Fabric  Addict 2023 Quilt parade: Midnight Mystery UFO 2016   Baubles quilt and  book review  for Kelly Young Fun Flannel  3 Flannel quilts , 2 homeless pillows and a Tilda Cow Sundown on Scraps  a scrap art quilt  and kit recycle bags/pillows Scrappy  strips throw 2 scrap bag  strip set quilts 2 More  Baby Hexi Quilts  including one g

Chain of Sunshine

A few weeks ago I was digging in my stash and I came across the gold text print. I had a little over a yard and wondered what I should do with it. I had tried it before when I needed a yellow gold and it never seemed to go with anything. I had a stack of 2.5" scraps of low volume and tons that were bits left from FQ's and such.  I went searching for a pattern and came across this  Scrappy Irish Chain  by Center Street quilts...free on her blog. It is low volume and gold too..perfect! I cut from my scraps until I had a huge pile of 2.5" strips and I dug out my moms old June Tailor strip cutting ruler. Once I sewed the strips together and had to cross cut them this ruler is a keeper! I had the blocks sewn up in no time.  This ruler truly does make it easy to cut accurate and the points match up pretty slick.  These bits were cut offs from my scraps and really while skinny they just seemed to good to throw out so..........on the back they went along with 3 extra blocks I mad

One room school house P.Q. 14.4 #2

Okay I am winning against myself again ....I was looking through my stash for my Pride and Prejudice fabric scraps when I came across this bag of fabric from the 80's. You know back when calico fabric cost less than $5 a yard and it was most often than not 45" wide not counting the selvedge.  Well I chose burgandy and forest green fabrics back then and they even ended up being my wedding colors. Oh gosh, can't believe I still had some of this stuff.  Anyway, I thought this fabric looks more like Little house on the praire than Pride and Prejudice (you can see what I made with the P and P fabric  HERE ) So thoughts of Little house on the Praire by Laura Ingalls Wilder Rebecca of Sunny Brook Farm by Kate Wiggin Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery all fit this fabric.  So I searched for something inspiring and found this pattern called "One room school house" by Diane Nagle and jumped in. It measure aprox. 43" x 43"  it has plaidish orgainic line quiltin

Scrappy sewing

Image
The last 7 days I did a quick scrap friendly sew along with  Plains and Pine  #wildstarsal on instagram.  We made scrappy diamonds and then we were supposed to sew the background but I didn't have quite enough so had to improvise.  I have a ton more scraps but every little bit ...right? I have a bunch of this lovely vip calico fabric that worked great for a foundation for my scraps. It is very thin so the bulk barely is noticed when I quilted.  I hardly use decorative type stitches on my machines so thought I would try this multi-stitch zig zag.  I thought since this was called Wildstar that it should be out in the wild but it was very cold and windy today so not such a good idea.  39"x 38" after shrinkage stash scraps and grunge diamond straight line quilting Linking up  Life in Pieces Melva Loves Scraps

P.Q. 14.2 Pink Tint: Tumbling tower of pink!

Image
Pink Tint!   I searched my stash and what do you know? I found 22 solid pink flavors in there!!! Yes and I think there may have been more but I pulled these out and decided I wanted to use as many as possible. Yes, I hoped to use some up but alas..no! I recently unearthed a Tula Pink book and an oldie book from my mom about basic traditional quilt blocks. After last months P.Q. 14 challenge of "one" or first, I liked using a few shapes as possible so I settled on a tumbling block.  Two shapes make up this whole quilt, the diamond and the triangle. Combined they make a half hexie! Found this variegated thread in my stash too! I did not waste any time finding a backing, I walked into my stash closet where I have bigger pieces and voila, a two tone pink print was right on top.  There she is: Tumbling Tower of Pink P.Q. 14.2  40" x 49" Stash fabrics Diamond pattern quilting with variegated thread Linking up with the host of Project Quilting  Kim at Persimon dreams   and

P. Q season 14.1

Image
Project Quilting has started the 14th season. P.Q. 14.1 theme is the 1st One. I went to my stash for this as again this year I would like to use some of the things I have. I pulled out my QCR Mini Wonderful Curves  book  and ruler.  Found a stack of FQs languishing in the back of the cupboard and started. My interpretation for The 1st One is to make One shape. This will be a half clamshell. The pattern I followed mostly is called Cider House. It was square but I managed to make an extra row so it is a bit bigger. Using the Quick Curve Ruler all I needed was to cut enough squares for the design. You can see my first cut. So simple and just what I needed to get my quilting mojo going.  The half clamshell makes a great looking pinwheel and it also makes the chain like apple core. So fun and easy. To get the extra row since I was using FQs, I had to be inventive. I was able to piece each of the scrap bits together to make the squares so I could cut the curve out. Some pieces are in the con

Quilts for Kids reproduction fabric

Image
I recently stopped in at the Quilts for Kids sew group to drop off some quilts I had ready to donate. On the table was a stack of reproduction 30's style fabrics. If you follow me you know that is not really my style but I knew that stack had been in the to do pile there for a while. I decided why not. I had two color groups and decided whatever I did I was going to use up every scrap in the quilts themselves.  My mom had given me long ago the Nancy Zieman plastic template for various sizes of tumbler. I remembered you cut a strip of the fabric then turn template to cut the angles. Perfect if you want to use up every inch!! For the pastels I picked the yellow and for the darker colors the blue green. I think they turned out pretty good.  I used whatever cuts I had left over to make the back wide enough. They each finished 45" x 54" so hope they can go to an older toddler maybe.  This is the first sewing and completing I have done in a long time. Still nursing back problem
