Scrap Adventure

Yesterday my friend Jen and I got together to soak up some street art. I happened to have a few quilts I needed to post about so it was perfect.  Jen found this great wall and so I made her be my quilt holder.  This one is a scrappy coin improv quilt.  42"X 49" organic wavy line quilting You would think a lot of scraps were used but...not so much.  There she is (Jen) in this cool alley she found.  Another scrappy finish. This one a UFO from a year couple years ago. 50"x 59" scrap made fabric then set in the circle (so fun) cross square straight line quilting Another cool mural wall with a giant frog.  I should name it Peek-a-boo just for Jen! Again some scraps but not a lot. One thing Jen wanted to do was an activity with paint chips. We headed out to a couple places and found some fun colors.....um, quilt colors of course.  We were to somehow make a poem though so using the names of the paint chips here goes..... Gung Fu or the Study of F 37"x 24" Flexible Patterning Score by Sherri Lynn Wood My Bee mates and I had a slow year last year. We decided to start this year off with a bit of a prompt for ourselves and totally optional. I got out SLW's book of scores and chose 'flexible patterning'. I picked a shape to work with that I thought would be fun to build on. The letter F. I chose a teal blue on blue color palette added in a fun Marcia Derse print and black and started the process.  What I love about this process is that you can really let everything go. No measuring, no cutting precisely, no following directions. Any time I has a minute I just sliced off some fabric and made some kind of an F. Mixed up colors sizes whatever happened.  Building with the building blocks. Rearranging and playing, letting the shapes sort of morph.  Finally I had all the space filled in with the letter shape however it turned out. This took a long time...several months of playing but I am pr

Dahlia Dreams and the process of learning

'Dahlia Dream" approx 30"x 31" freezer paper pieced, applique  This dahlia was an ordeal. Several years ago I came across this pattern made with freezer paper.  The colors are chosen the freezer paper pattern pieces are drawn and cut out by hand, ironed to the strips of fabric and then you sew the whole thing together without seeing the front. yep..... Soooo much paper must be taken off. Lots of missed points were revealed. I didn't remember this being an issue the last time I made one. It didn't want to lay flat either so I had to applique it onto another fabric and I came up with doing a bias tape trim around the circle. I was able to get it flat.  That is one good thing I guess. With all the mishaps I decided to experiment with some quilting in outside corners but quickly gave that up to.  It looks okay in places. I went ahead and finished it because I love the colors and the process even though it is not quality it

Today's question from Emily at  Mommy's Nap Time What is your favorite Kona cotton or other fabric you run out of all the time? Lately it seems to be Kona Charcoal.    I also like Kona  But I love color so go figure?? I think it would be fun to make my own color palette  to have all the time. I get scared when I think I want a whole bolt of something. ha WIP right now has some of my Kona Coal that I love.  This is one of my blocks from the  Skill builder BOM I have branched out and made a few other color quilts but I do love a bit of black in most things in and out of quilting.  I think the grays and the blacks really show off your work.  This is a journey and my color favs come and go but I think these three will stay with me for a while.
