Notan - a Bee group quilt

Image
When I was Queen of the Bee I chose a theme based on notan. I was not sure how the group would interpret the idea but I also had a piece of fabric called "opposite" by Marsha Derse that I thought might help.  The fabrics I gave was various blacks and kona snow. There is a tiny bit of purple and some of the opposite fabric line. Each block was so different. I finally pieced them together with the background that I wanted to be opposite too. not working..... much better I think clear thread, straight line quilting

Quilts for Kids reproduction fabric

Image
I recently stopped in at the Quilts for Kids sew group to drop off some quilts I had ready to donate. On the table was a stack of reproduction 30's style fabrics. If you follow me you know that is not really my style but I knew that stack had been in the to do pile there for a while. I decided why not. I had two color groups and decided whatever I did I was going to use up every scrap in the quilts themselves.  My mom had given me long ago the Nancy Zieman plastic template for various sizes of tumbler. I remembered you cut a strip of the fabric then turn template to cut the angles. Perfect if you want to use up every inch!! For the pastels I picked the yellow and for the darker colors the blue green. I think they turned out pretty good.  I used whatever cuts I had left over to make the back wide enough. They each finished 45" x 54" so hope they can go to an older toddler maybe.  This is the first sewing and completing I have done in a long time. Still nursing back problem...

Bee Break - Exercise

Gung Fu or the Study of F 37"x 24" Flexible Patterning Score by Sherri Lynn Wood My Bee mates and I had a slow year last year. We decided to start this year off with a bit of a prompt for ourselves and totally optional. I got out SLW's book of scores and chose 'flexible patterning'. I picked a shape to work with that I thought would be fun to build on. The letter F. I chose a teal blue on blue color palette added in a fun Marcia Derse print and black and started the process.  What I love about this process is that you can really let everything go. No measuring, no cutting precisely, no following directions. Any time I has a minute I just sliced off some fabric and made some kind of an F. Mixed up colors sizes whatever happened.  Building with the building blocks. Rearranging and playing, letting the shapes sort of morph.  Finally I had all the space filled in with the letter shape however it turned out. This took a long time...several months of playing but I am pr...

Every little thing equals progress

Image
I made 5 mini quilts! Yes I did...slow and steady like. These came about because my BEE mate Jen asked for quilted cards. I loved this idea though thought it would be daunting to make something so small.  I am only supposed to tackle sewing projects in little bits of time, mainly because the posture (as you all know) in sewing can be very muscle fatiguing.  I would guess about 5 minutes at a time I worked my way through the minis. They are all about 4.25" x 5ish"  Of course I had a black and white theme! I wanted tiny frames in black and found a piece of black fleece. Next time I would go for black felt or even black batting.  I can't wait to see what everyone does for theirs.  I have received a couple of them so far. In one of the packages was this.... so funny and just what I needed that day. Hmmm wonder where I will use that? So I started a project a few months ago. I was trying to think how I could do some of what my lqg was challenging which was to do some ...

UFO busting -Ice Ice Baby

Image
Catching up on posting some quilts. I don't know about anyone else but I am spending more time on computer these days. I sometimes forget that I could be posting some of the things I finish when I finish so that it is not so time consuming but I don't ...so here we are! ha Ice Ice Baby is a small throw quilt I made by playing around with EQ7 and the Quick Curve Ruler.  40.5" x 49"  Super fast curve sewing using the QCR!! Fun variegated fabric for the cones.  Simple cross straightline quilting.  The 3 fabrics from the front are from the same line as the back .....so cute! I had the blocks done but just needed to put them together and quilt.  I also found these when looking for mask material. Amazing what is all stashed away. ha Speaking of masks...... I started out with making faux bias tape ties and even made a short video on how to make them on fb.  I quickly switched over to tee-shirt ties. We have ...

Dog Days of Summer - Misc

Image
Dog Days - from dictionary.com =  plural noun the   sultry   part  of  the   summer,   supposed  to  occur   during   the   period   that   Sirius,   the   Dog   Star, rises  at  the   same   time  as  the   sun:   now   often   reckoned   from   July  3 to  August  11. a  period   marked  by  lethargy,   inactivity,  or  indolence. Bits from my dog days:  BeeUtifully Modern Bee mate Liz picked an open theme for her Bee blocks. Sort of "a day in the life" or "inspired by Gwen Marsten-ish" or "whatever makes you happy" combo. The fabric colors she picked were way cool. I put off doing mine for a long time because I was not sure how to depict a day.  The top block is sort of a maze. Each days starts out with hope and then depending on how I feel, I either accompl...

Remember when

I joined the  New Blogger Blog Hop 2013 ?  (Check it out, I think my answers are still the same as what I wrote about then) Wow that seems so long ago.  Guess what? I still love blogging about what I am doing creatively. This year it has been kind of a bumpy road getting back into quilting. I never stopped but had many delays last year because my husband and I decided to remodel our kitchen and dining area ourselves.  This year I have been working on catching up with many outreach and charity projects.  I planned a project for our local National Quilting Day Celebration at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum.  Two quilts were made and donated to the local Child Advocacy Center.  Read more here about  Love of every day things .  I taught a class to help guild members be more confident with using the Quick Curve Ruler made by  Sew Kind of Wonderful This quilt made by members of the classes and  the q...
