P.Q. 15.3 - Inside out theme - a Modern T-shirt

Image
This weeks challenge for Persimon Dreams Project Quilting theme is Inside out. Oh boy this was a bit of a question mark.  I had something in mind but was not sure if I could make it work and in a week. This is a horrible picture but it has the spot to the right mid area that I bled on  so thought I would share!! ha I decided on a modern tshirt wholecloth quilt with reverse applique raw edge cutouts.   I layered fleece for the backing, then a slick lycra type jersey crazy print fabric and then a cotton/poly/lycra t-shirt fabric over the top. Drew my design, pinned and cut out the shapes. Once cut I stitched around loosely leaving all the knots on the outside back.  Why (k)not?  I am just going to say this was a bit tough to stitch through and I punched at least 9 holes into myself doing it even with thimbles and guards. The lycra made the weave/knit tight and sometimes my needle went through and sometimes I had to force it thus getting punched in various places.  Before I got it all qui

A Fingerpaints finish-tada!

Image
This is the Fingerpaints quilt by  Quiltfortco  from last summers qal. I used her pattern but made it improv style. I used a ton of scrappy solids and tone on tone pieces from my stash along with tons of strips in my scrap bins. I finished it out a little bigger by using a few more strips.  74" x 79" quilted by  Grace Elizabeths longarm I grabbed a few photos but it has been super windy the last couple of days.  This was truly a fun quilt to make. I love the play on light with the fabrics and I like how my photos sorta looked like the light from behind it was shining on the lighter spots. :) linking up with  Oh Scrap Wendys  Peacock Party from bolt to beauty

Less Hideous Challenge = Rose Garden

Rose Garden  22" x 22" Less Hideous Challenge for OMQG Improv Piecing Organic Hatch quilting One of my local guilds set up a challenge where you pulled fabric out of a big bag of uglies. I picked the two above which I felt were lesser of all the dated fabrics. I kept them laying around until I thought what I wanted to do. It was hard because the bigger print would be hard to put in any kind of quilt block and it would still read traditional.  Then I figured I would have to improv a traditional block, in this case the 9 patch.  Also the colors, which are hard to tell on here, are pinky peachy in the large print and dark deep rosy red in the smaller print. The larger print has a touch of green which is the the complimentary color. If I went there, I would be in holiday territory. I didn't want that. I decided to put only a small amount of green in and pull out the peachy colors in the prints for a more analogous color set up. I chose grunge in both shad

County Fair Time Surprise

Image
Fair Time is always hot and always interesting. Usually I hang out with my friend Jen but she was off on a family vacation so I had to look for a sub. I found Eddie on the second day of the fair.  He was a bit boisterous but generally a pretty good guy. He was a blue ribbon winner so we had much to talk about.  I entered 5 of my quilts in the fair and somehow I won with them all.  Best Recycled award and blue ribbon-From the Mending Pile Original post  HERE Best Modern and blue ribbon - Edit Original post  From the Cutting room floor =Edit Reserve Champion and blue ribbon - Japandi a Bee Quilt Original post  Here and  Champion and a blue -Chihuly inspired Original post  HERE quilted by Marsha Swanson (Dog Ear Creek Quilts) Omaha and then this happened a Champion, a blue and then Best in County- Urbanologie  This is one of the quilts I sent out to be quilted so I could give a QCR trunk show. Trial Run

One of my local quilt guilds had a group of lovely ladies come and talk about various charity and out reach programs last month. At the end of the talk I sent out a challenge to design a small quilt for one of them.  I handed out graph paper with the optional sizes on it and told them to keep it modern and simple.  We hope to have them turned in by next meeting and with a little luck and some volunteers, I hope to turn at least one of the designs into a kit-able quilt kit for others to sew up.  I thought I better give it a go so here is one of my simple modern designs. This went together really quick and didn't waste much fabric. I was able to grab fabrics I had on hand to go with the cute butterfly center fabric.   Since the design was so simple I took the time to free motion mums all over in Aurifil gray.  I am getting better at free motion but still not great. I could make several more of these before I will say good. :) I thought a local park was a good photo op
