QAL's can push you to a finish

Earlier this year Suzy over at Suzy Quilts hosted a sew along using her Modern Fans pattern.  She not only hosted a great sew along but she was giving away a Bernina Sewing machine at the end. Well ....I have a friend who would like a new machine so I pressured her into joining the sew along with me. We did not win but we each made really super cool quilts.
See my friend Jennifer's quilt @Jenniferunderthejunipertree blog

My monster Modern Fans black and white beauty is called "A Star is Born". I played with the color layout (see below shots) to come up with the secondary star shape in the dark colors in my quilt.  Plus I used this fun face fabric see below.
85" x 85"
All fabric was found in my stash (and there is lots more where that came from)
I machine stitched the binding on and rounded the corners. I should have rounded them more but this was a nice easy curve.
I used one extra block on the back for the label.
Because of the size my dear friend Mary let me come over and play on her longarm to quilt it. I used organic lines over each block in opposite directions.

I am going to write the label info in that lonely block on the back. One quarter of the block is light and perfect for writing on.
The rest of the back is leftover fabrics from the front and more stash fabric.

I would like to say that this large quilt made a dent in my stash but it did not!!! Anyway.....here is my sample block using face fabric.

I decided to strategically place face fabric block in the design. Part of the star is born idea came from this fabric. I can identify a few people in that fabric as stars but not all. I am pretty sure there is Elvis, Twiggy and maybe Bob Dillon? any ideas??

Making the fan blades out of scraps was pretty fun.

Offset those with some lighter plainish blocks.  Here is where I started playing with light and dark blocks and had to do some ripping to make it all come together.

Playing with design.

A fan blade/face fabric and the spikey dark fabric has silver glitter in it so I made only a few of these for the corner blocks.

Here was my final quilt top layout for the sew along and quick park photo shoot but the wind got involved.

The wind kicked up some leaves which make a perfect contrast to my noir shaded  quilt.

My photo shoot at the park was cold and breezy and I forgot my hangers to hang up this big boy so I had to settle for some flat lays and creative draping. So glad I did the sew along and have a finished quilt to put on my bed.
