Guild challenge -recycled modern The Lamp, My Light






The International Quilt Museum in Lincoln Ne. where our local guild meets joined our guild for a challenge.  They have an exhibition up based off of use of feedsack fabrics and other reused textiles.  They gave us 5 vintage quilt blocks to choose from to make something more modern but with recycled or other textiles. 

I used a black and white tea towel some a shirt, a skirt and some silk lining. The block I chose was the star block. I decided to do it in a QAYG method. cutting batting to various sizes to make the star more improv. 
Since it came together in a lantern shape that I love I felt it fit the bible quote from Matthew 5: 15-16

This is currently hanging with the guilds display at the IQM.

Project Quilting Season 5 - #1

  So excited that Kim over at  Persimon Dreams is hosting Project Quilting again this year. It was so fun last year and I accomplished a lot.  This year I had so many ideas for this first Challenge. I wanted to do something more arty but when it came down to it I really need to make lap or baby size quilts for some of the charities I contribute to. I am sure I will do something more artsy before the challenge is over but for today I am going with a version of a scrap quilt.  The Challenge is "String Along with Me" I used the same strip quilt as you go as I did in a quilt I made last Oct following Maureen Cracknell and her Herringbone QAYG quilt tutorial.  This was is called Scrappy II  it is 43 x 45. All scrap strings, scrap batting pieces and scrap binding. Mountain High, Valley Low - The improv triangle QAL

"Mountain High, Valley Low"  48" x 38" improv from scraps line quilting in diamond pattern The improv triangle QAL with Nicholas Ball on IG was so much fun. It was just the most glorious distraction for me. I was able to sit down and make a few blocks at a time and didn't have to worry about measurements and sizes. It was just what I needed during my waiting game with my health issues.  The back piece was something I hand dyed a while back. I think it worked pretty great for this back with a few leftover blocks. I had several versions going and of course didn't think it was going to end up so big but it was just so fun to work on.  Luckily I had just the right aurifil thread. I ended up using most of the lighter ones which were a mix of 50 and 40 weight.  It took a long time to figure out what I wanted to quilt across all those colors. WIP - Elegant Curves

I was faced with a challenge last week that I had no spare time for. Even though I would not get it done for the deadline of the challenge I wanted to complete this table runner anyway. I will be showing a demo on the Quick Curve ruler next week and wanted one simple piece from the book  One Wonderful Curve  by sewkindofwonderful.   I changed up the layout and block number to accommodate my fabric and color choices to go with.  Will I always love grunge fabric? I think so.....  One of my goals this year for myself was to try more dense quilting that is not matchstick.  I had fun with this but I chose to backstitch instead of bury my threads and I should have not done that.  I have a knot button on my machine but still have to bury the ends so I am curious to what most of you do? Easy Delectable Mountain x 3

"Delectable X 3" 60" x 69" hand quilted big stitch white cotton 30wt thread I finally finished this UFO recently. Several years ago already, I got together with my friend and fellow quilter Jen and we did a batch of indigo and other dyes. I had picked up a thrift old sheet. This sheet was super tightly woven and soft. I tore it in pieces and did some dye folds then didn't know what to do with the different ones. I decided as a background for this easy Delectable Mountain block 3 prong version it would be great. I played around with the traditional 4 prong but liked this bolder 3 version better. I made an easy tutorial  HERE . The sheet has a border of flowers in blue and green so I decided to just use it in this quilt and it is my favorite part! Today my friend and I went down  to the sunken gardens and to the rose garden and took some pics.  I did some big stitch hand quilting in white for this piece.
