Clowning Around

"Clowning Around"
Zen Medallion pattern by Latifah Saafir
50" x50"

So much bias tape on this quilt. I enjoyed making it and sewing it on but when I went to sew the wedges together I had a hard time getting the bias tape to match in width. Because I made the bias with various fabrics some pressed better than others. I do recommend the AGF's because their hand is so smooth and presses beautifully but if you use the light prints you might get see through seams. The pressing really needs to go whichever way is the flattest.
I wanted to quilt this by hand but I soon realized that with bias tape the thickness adds up. Bias is already 2 layers on the edges sewn onto background makes 3, batting 4, backing 5. Now add putting bias tape over another fabric as in the domed pieces above...6 and finally what about over another piece of bias? 7,8! So not for my whimpy sewing fingers!!!

I ended up using my walking foot and doing what I call 'radiant' lines around making it feel even more like a circus tent.

The center required extra care. It was really easy to sew the wedges and get the bias a little too tight. That made the fabric in the center want to 'pooch' a bit once all the wedges were sewn together. I did have to block the top before I tried quilting it. I thought it was actually a goner but it pulled through fairly nicely.

This quilt has quite a few troubles but I love it anyway. It was fun to applique, block, make bias tape in various sizes, figure out the quilting and work with polka dots. I love the colors too!

Bonus ...I finally went to my favorite coffee shop and used the wall next to the building for a photo shoot. I think it's kinda fun!

This is absolutely GORGEOUS! I've wanted to make a mandala quilt forever. I have made a few kaleidoscope quilts in the Paula Nadelstern style. I love the on location shoot!
What a quilt!!! It's beautiful! And yes, what a great wall to take quilt photos!!!

This is an awesome quilt. The design and your fabric choices are just beautiful. I agree that all of those layers would have been almost impossible to hand sew though. Thanks for linking up!
