MQG remake challenge -Strength and Beauty



"Strength and Beauty" is my MQG remake from the September 2014 "Chess on the Steps" quilt made by Krista Hennebury of Poppyprints Blog.

So as I mentioned in my previous post that I have been having an issue with my eye/brain connection causing me to have vertigo 24/7 some weeks.  So little or nothing in the way of creativity has been happening. When I had a moment that I could stand I wanted to jump into something good. Krista has a fun method for making improv units she calls improv under the influence piecing technique. Her quilt was on my bucket list to make one day and then suddenly the MQG came up with a challenge to remake some of the free quilt patterns they have featured over the years. 

Believe it or not but I had most of the colors already in my stash and ready to go. I had to locate two of the blues but the rest were ready to go. I took this for a sign for me to make this quilt. 
The color palette the MQG chose was Bella Nautical, dusk, mustard, natural, petunia, capri and violet. I use all but the violet. 
Because this quilt needed variety to make the warm and cool sides flush out I added in some shades and tints of the original colors. 


I think the Petunia and the mustard were a good mix. 


I used my ruler as a design board to move a bunch of improv slices to and from my machine. 

Within no time at all the quilt top was finished. 


She sort of sparkles! :)

Organic Cross hatch lines for the quilting. 

So if you notice my center block has a tiny pink crack going through it. Call me too emotional but I felt when I started making this that it needed to represent where I am right now. I might have a struggle going on with my eyes right now, a little crack in my creative journey if you will.  From the crack I was able to build the steps with strength and beauty is the result. 

Maybe this will get accepted to the MQG remake series (#mqgmodernclassic) but even if it doesn't it is a huge part of my current healing journey.

It’s a great design, I like how you added the narrow strip to reflect yourself and your journey, it tells your story. I really like this petunia and yellows, great colour combination. I hope your vertigo improves, I can’t give you any tips on living with vertigo, but after living with a health issue for a while my tip would be when your quilting time is short and sporadic, only sew what you love and enjoy, sewing anything else is a waste of time and energy. Happy sewing.

Project Quilting Season 5 - #1

  So excited that Kim over at  Persimon Dreams is hosting Project Quilting again this year. It was so fun last year and I accomplished a lot.  This year I had so many ideas for this first Challenge. Mountain High, Valley Low - The improv triangle QAL

"Mountain High, Valley Low"  48" x 38" improv from scraps line quilting in diamond pattern The improv triangle QAL with Nicholas Ball on IG was so much fun. It was just the most glorious distraction for me. I was able to sit down and make a few blocks at a time and didn't have to worry about measurements and sizes. It was just what I needed during my waiting game with my health issues.  The back piece was something I hand dyed a while back. I think it worked pretty great for this back with a few leftover blocks. I had several versions going and of course didn't think it was going to end up so big but it was just so fun to work on.  Luckily I had just the right aurifil thread. I ended up using most of the lighter ones which were a mix of 50 and 40 weight.  It took a long time to figure out what I wanted to quilt across all those colors.   I am a Maker 24" x 24" pattern by Liz Harvantine   HERE matchstick quilting I have loved this pattern since it came out and this is my third time in making the small wall hanging size.   It is really fun to make.  This piece was inspired by a piece of text fabric that a friend who happens to be co-chair of this quilt show, gave me a few weeks ago. It has text and sheet music on it. Then I found some fabric that has sewing pattern terms and quilt blocks on it. Some fabric with writing, photography, architecture and diagrams and put them all together to represent the makers of many beautiful things. This wall hanging will be donated to one of my local quilt guilds for their quilt show auction coming up Oct 6-8 to raise money for the guild.   I might have to buy it back I love it so much! Japandi - a bee quilt

Japandi 57" x 49"  improv crosshatch organic quilting a BeeUtifully Modern Bee quilt my Bee mates: Jen, Phyllis, Liz and Judy  This quilt is the first blocks my beemates and I made together.  I was up for Queen Bee first and I chose a combination of Japans wabi-sabi style mixed with the clean natural lines of Scandinavian design. Throw in asking for making your own stripes and a neutral palette and you get Japandi style! It took me 2 full length audio books to piece the blocks together once they were turned in. I think I figured close to 22 hours. It was a challenge to create balance and use up all the bits.  It is hard to tell from here but some of those little bits are tiny tiny bits, skinny lines and stripes.  With our Bee if you want your piece bigger you have to make quite a few blocks and bits to fill in.
