Delectable Mountain X 3 Free Tutorial
A few years ago my friend Jen and I got together and dyed some fabrics with Indigo. We had some sheets and some PFD (prepared for dyeing) fabrics. We had a good time dyeing all the bits and trying all the folds. When we were done I was debating what to do with all the pieces.
Evidently I decided on using some blue fabrics and a solid white to contrast with the dyed printings. I found the box with all the bits in the other day. No notes no real anything but a few cut 10" blocks.
I decided to figure it out and since I had to back track my steps I thought I would put the tutorial for the block on here. It is a really easy fun block and I hope you try it.
So for the block above you will need 4- 8" x 9" blocks. 2 10" squares will make 2 or half the block above in the mirror image you see.
-Start with 2 10" squares of fabric, contrasting. Right sides together, draw a diagonal line on the lightest fabric.
-Press seams open
-Layer the Half Square Triangle blocks, Right sides together, laying opposite colors, line up the center seam (this is a little tricky but if you match up the seams in the corner and smooth the blocks with your hand they will be pretty close to lined up)
-Get them as close to being squarely on top of each other as you can for squaring up with your ruler
-Gently lay your ruler on top of the two layered squares using the diagonal line of the ruler on the diagonal line of the sewn squares.
-Square up to 9" (I do two sides then carefully pick up the block by holding two sides and turn it around.) if you have a rotating cutting mat large enough for this block it would be great to use now!
-Do not move the blocks after you square up the last two sides.
-Measure 3" in from the left edge and cut a strip, then lift ruler place over and cut another 3" strip leaving the last piece a 3" strip.
-You now have stacked 3 sets of 3" x 9" strips
Now it gets a little tricky but you can scroll down to see how the separated strips should look if this doesn't make sense. (sometimes you just have to do it)
-Starting with the left top strip, pick it up and lay it to your far left flipping it over so right side is up. Then take the middle piece and flip it over next to the other and repeat with last piece.
-Should look like above with the diagonals all going one way.
-Now look at the remaining 3 strips. They are right side up but they are not the mirror image of the above block.
-The strips are just upside down. Start with the left one and just turn it around and do the same with the other two. -Should now look something like this...
-Sew the first 3 strips together and press open. Then repeat with the second 3 strips.
-At this point the blocks square up at 8" x 9". Do not sew the blocks together until your have more blocks and design on a layout. There are many ways these fun blocks can be put together.
You can layout this block so many different ways!! Here are just a few......
