Friday Finish Improv "Closer to you"

Image
"Closer to you" approx 46" x 48" spiral quilting did not straighten edges, just bound as is I finished! I am super surprised at this one. I have been working on doing the Improv scores from the book The improv handbook for modern quilters by Sherri Lynn Wood.  This is my #4 score on the patchwork doodle. I started the center blocks of this quilt last year when Louisiana Bendolph taught a class about Gees Bend quilts and quilters.  A good portion of this fabric is up-cycled pieces from my moms scrap box. The coral strips are pieces from an old dress. There is even a dart or two in my quilt that I left in.  Some of the denim is from a patch bag that she also had in her stash so I am assuming they are bits from her old jeans.  I didn't have any striped scraps from my dads old Oshkosh overalls so I went to the thrift store and bought a few striped shirts.  The lighter blue fabrics are from the portrait quilt I made of my mom called  So Blue .  The sco

WIP Midnight Mystery Quilt Top Finish

Image
Finished my Midnight Mystery Quilt top last night put on by Cheryl Brickey of Meadow Mist Designs.  Today I could play around with some photos. I wish I had it quilted because I really like how this turned out.  It finished around 72" square and I think I will need some help getting that quilted...maybe.  I used story fabric in the mustard/gold and my favorite news print in  cream. This is the third quilt I made with the Kona snow that came in a kit for my "The eyes have it"  double-sided quilt. I still have about 3/4ths of a yard left.   I admit I have a few troubles with my flying geese blocks and some of the points made with the flying geese points later. I think the squares pressed a little biasy but over all I really like it.  If anyone has any hints on how to make the no waste flying geese and you never get extra fabric in the point from when the other piece is sewn on...I wish you would share. I always get a little raw edge in there as if

Around the Block Party!

Image
"Around the Block" party finish this week. 40 "x 40" approx.  My last week was so productive that I only have a small finish so far this week.  My lqg got together one afternoon to make improv house blocks. It was so much fun that I made a whole block party of them.  I was trying out an idea for a color challenge using a paint chip that has 3 colors. This one had an amber orange color, a chocolate brown and an aqua. I sort of mixed in some gold too but it was fun trying out a color scheme like this and I think it would be fun guild project.  I love how they turned out and and it has started some talk about doing some outreach work for Habitat for Humanity homes. These would be great to do and each house adds a bit of whimsy.  Linking up with Let's bee social @  Sew Fresh Quilts and NTT @  My Quilt Infatuation and Amanda Jean @  Crazy Mom Quilts  and Show off Saturday with  Sew Can She

A few finishes

Image
Really happy to finish this one.  Here is the strange story of how this one came about.  I bought a quilt kit on Craftsy a while ago for the pixelated eye. Not to make the eye quilt but because it was on sale and there was lots of Kona fabric in the kit. I got the kit and sat on it while I designed this simple "eye" quilt on graft paper using up some scraps and using the big piece of Kona Snow that came in the kit. I cut this all out and sewed it together and I had a ton of fabric left in the kit. I decided to go ahead and make the pixel quilt anyway.  The back of my designed "eye" is the pixel eye!! And then guess what? I still have a bunch of Kona Snow left from the kit so I have already cut it up and sewed into another whole quilt. That one I hope to finish soon. But wait, there is more...I still have Kona Snow left.  It is almost a yard and I am sure I will find something to do with it.  Let me just say this was a really good bargain.  The "Eyes Hav

Finished top for Around the Block Improv

Last Saturday one of my guilds had a sew along for wonky houses. I wanted to do it because improv is so fun for me. It was a great afternoon and was able to make one full house and start on another. This week I put the rest of them together. It was really fun. Not sure how great overall this is but it was a good time and I am sure someone will love to snuggle under it.  Linking up with Confessions of a Fabric Addict  Can I get a whoop whoop and Crazy Mom Quilts  with Amanda Jean

PQ- Thread

Project Quilting challenge this week was thread. I found this cute Cori Dantini print and decided to go for the fmqing and not stop until I was done no matter how awful my stitches were. Yep, they are not the greatest but I kept at it. I tried several fillers and just kept going.  Made in Ne. approx 24" x 30" Linking up with Persimmon dreams PQ challenge  Here voting will be linked up later today for voting all week long.  VOTE HERE  until noon on friday 12th of Feb. WIP - swirl

Image
Not quite sure what I am doing with this improv swirl piece.  I was just so excited that I could improv it around and around. I made it to a size I thought was big enough and then wanted to sort of swirl out  of it. It reminds me of a fabric corsage. :) I think this is the better direction but I have to set it aside and stew on a it a bit. Any comments or ideas are welcome...finish as is ?  For now I am just pleased it lays almost flat!!  linking up with WIP Wed. over at  Freshly Pieced and Let's Bee Social over at  Sew Fresh Quilts

Friday Finish - Quick Curve Mini

Image
and this is from my UFO pile too! So happy to finish.  I love this block with the curve edges. The block finishes at approx. 16" square.  I needed a small piece to use my leather roller foot to quilt it. I could have done more but I just wanted to play for a few minutes today.  Used up some more of my scrap fabric on the back. I doubt I will ever tire of green and black and grey fabric color combos.  Linking up with Finish it up Friday with Amanda Jean @ Crazy mom quilts and Can I get a Whoop Whoop

WIP - Elegant Curves

Image
I was faced with a challenge last week that I had no spare time for. Even though I would not get it done for the deadline of the challenge I wanted to complete this table runner anyway. I will be showing a demo on the Quick Curve ruler next week and wanted one simple piece from the book  One Wonderful Curve  by sewkindofwonderful.   I changed up the layout and block number to accommodate my fabric and color choices to go with.  Will I always love grunge fabric? I think so.....  One of my goals this year for myself was to try more dense quilting that is not matchstick.  I had fun with this but I chose to backstitch instead of bury my threads and I should have not done that.  I have a knot button on my machine but still have to bury the ends so I am curious to what most of you do? For fun I took this on my front door. I love how the soft light shines through.  Linking up with WIP Wed @  Freshly pieced  and  Let's Bee Social at  Sew Fresh Quilts
