A few finishes

Really happy to finish this one.  Here is the strange story of how this one came about.  I bought a quilt kit on Craftsy a while ago for the pixelated eye. Not to make the eye quilt but because it was on sale and there was lots of Kona fabric in the kit. I got the kit and sat on it while I designed this simple "eye" quilt on graft paper using up some scraps and using the big piece of Kona Snow that came in the kit. I cut this all out and sewed it together and I had a ton of fabric left in the kit. I decided to go ahead and make the pixel quilt anyway. 

The back of my designed "eye" is the pixel eye!! And then guess what? I still have a bunch of Kona Snow left from the kit so I have already cut it up and sewed into another whole quilt. That one I hope to finish soon. But wait, there is more...I still have Kona Snow left.  It is almost a yard and I am sure I will find something to do with it.  Let me just say this was a really good bargain.  The "Eyes Have it" quilt above measures about 80 x 80!

Not a great shot but I was walking through the park and these two trees were painted purple and fuchsia...I saw it as a sign and took a quick pic.

 Also a couple of Quilts for Kids charity quilts I finished up. I gave a demo at their sew day on how to back to front bind and how to attache and sew on binding with a hemmer foot. 
Scrap quilt using up bits of scraps and bits of batting. Made a great bright kids quilt. 
Modern design by MaryAnn Morris from our local quilt guild. This was a contest I held at guild to design a modern quilt for Quilts for Kids. I think this is a fun and simple winner!

I have heard that before about the Craftsy kits, generous fabric. I better order me some kits! I love both those eye quilts, but most especially your design. The quilting is sooo good!!

Yes, that eye is so great - aren't you glad you made it? I can't believe you had so much left over from the kit - that is lucky! You got a lot done recently!

Project Quilting Season 5 - #1

  So excited that Kim over at  Persimon Dreams is hosting Project Quilting again this year. It was so fun last year and I accomplished a lot.  This year I had so many ideas for this first Challenge. I wanted to do something more arty but when it came down to it I really need to make lap or baby size quilts for some of the charities I contribute to. I am sure I will do something more artsy before the challenge is over but for today I am going with a version of a scrap quilt.  The Challenge is "String Along with Me" I used the same strip quilt as you go as I did in a quilt I made last Oct following Maureen Cracknell and her Herringbone QAYG quilt tutorial.  This was is called Scrappy II  it is 43 x 45. All scrap strings, scrap batting pieces and scrap binding. Mountain High, Valley Low - The improv triangle QAL

"Mountain High, Valley Low"  48" x 38" improv from scraps line quilting in diamond pattern The improv triangle QAL with Nicholas Ball on IG was so much fun. It was just the most glorious distraction for me. I was able to sit down and make a few blocks at a time and didn't have to worry about measurements and sizes. It was just what I needed during my waiting game with my health issues.  The back piece was something I hand dyed a while back. I think it worked pretty great for this back with a few leftover blocks. I had several versions going and of course didn't think it was going to end up so big but it was just so fun to work on.  Luckily I had just the right aurifil thread. I ended up using most of the lighter ones which were a mix of 50 and 40 weight.  It took a long time to figure out what I wanted to quilt across all those colors.   I am a Maker 24" x 24" pattern by Liz Harvantine   HERE matchstick quilting I have loved this pattern since it came out and this is my third time in making the small wall hanging size.   It is really fun to make.  This piece was inspired by a piece of text fabric that a friend who happens to be co-chair of this quilt show, gave me a few weeks ago. It has text and sheet music on it. Then I found some fabric that has sewing pattern terms and quilt blocks on it. Some fabric with writing, photography, architecture and diagrams and put them all together to represent the makers of many beautiful things. This wall hanging will be donated to one of my local quilt guilds for their quilt show auction coming up Oct 6-8 to raise money for the guild.   I might have to buy it back I love it so much! Japandi - a bee quilt

Japandi 57" x 49"  improv crosshatch organic quilting a BeeUtifully Modern Bee quilt my Bee mates: Jen, Phyllis, Liz and Judy  This quilt is the first blocks my beemates and I made together.  I was up for Queen Bee first and I chose a combination of Japans wabi-sabi style mixed with the clean natural lines of Scandinavian design. Throw in asking for making your own stripes and a neutral palette and you get Japandi style! It took me 2 full length audio books to piece the blocks together once they were turned in. I think I figured close to 22 hours. It was a challenge to create balance and use up all the bits.  It is hard to tell from here but some of those little bits are tiny tiny bits, skinny lines and stripes.  With our Bee if you want your piece bigger you have to make quite a few blocks and bits to fill in.
